I was perusing a Time magazine excerpt yesterday and found that there is a thing called skype phones that was sweeping the internet.These two are now loaded beyond their craziest expectations because of selling their concept to one of the premier sites on the web,e bay.What am I talking about.A lot of people call it voip.It is not a new idea, making long distance calls over the internet for free.

The implications are obvious, the first being that if you can attach a video phone to skipe, you can talk and see just about anyone anywhere in the world.It is essentail you get a rapid connection as quickly as you can.Video bandwidth does not justify clarity over a slow connection .

One of the worlds biggest sites Ebay has already jumped on the bandwagon and is flogging phones specifically for skyp.We think skype has been in existence for a year to date and it is proving hugely popular.

The bigger commercial telecom firms are beginning to sell voice over internet protocol packages.The question on everyones tongues is will it last the distance.Is it here to stay or will it have vanished off the face of the net within 12 months

You can be fairly sure that many start ups will flood the market in the hope of making a killing but it has an established foothold.Then inevitably the feds will enter and regulate it.Skype has to make a dollar or two as well and they do this by charging consumers who phone home to their landlines from their computer

The next big thing which voip are making a bold move towards is the notion of web conferencing. With 911 happenning relatively recently more people want to travel less and less so it is a great opportunity for voip to put video conferencing back on the map

My thoughts are that audio and video over the internet, especially over a broadband connection will see a shift in popularity.Many people think video and audio will be a passing fad but all the evidence points in the other direction.

But one thing is for sure, it's not just hype they're muttering about, and only time will tell if the general public will catch on when they get their free skype download.We'll see in the next few years.
